Why It’s Important To Stand Out

A couple of weekends ago I was treated to a display by the Red Arrows who were doing their thing at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. I’m fortunate enough to live just a few minutes away from Goodwood so found myself enjoying a spectacular show out of my bedroom window. At one point the planes were so close to my house that I could actually see the pilots inside as the flew over my roof!

It was such a moving experience. I mean, it really took my breath away which doesn’t happen as often as I’d like it to, to be honest. As I watched them perform their amazing show whilst listening to the commentry on local radio (complete with the radio communications between pilots) I started to really think about why I was so awestruck. I mean, of course, there’s the incredible talent, skill, dedication to training, and everything that goes with getting to that level, but it was more than that.

I started to think about why it affected me so much.

Those pilots, in that moment, represented to me everything that is so unique about being a human being. What I was witnessing was human excellence - being the best you can be at what you choose to do. Pushing yourself to the absolute limits, and sometimes beyond, giving your very best.

It took something as visually spectacular as this for me to give it some thought but then, on further thought I realised that human excellence in any form is moving, inspiring, thought-provoking, heart warming and beautiful. It makes you question your own beliefs about what is possible - about what you’re possible of yourself.

Whether it’s making a huge difference with a business concept (watch the video) or a manager looking after her employees, we can all be inspired to bring a little more excellence into our lives.

What are you going to do this week to make you stand out - to be outstanding?
